Hello everyone!
Week two email:
Hello everyone!
This week has been absolutely amazing! Everyday we have 3 hour classes in the morning and 3 hour classes at night. I'm learning so much everyday! We also have 2 investigators to teach during the day called TRC's. We were just starting to get to know our first ones when they gave us new ones this week! Even though they lengthened our teaching time to 45 minutes this week it flies by so fast! Our first lesson with out new investigator was on the Law of Chastity so that was interesting. My companion and I already know our second one is a member just pretending to be an investigator because one of the Elders in our district knows her so he ruined the surprise for us. I was so mad at him! I wanted it to feel real but I couldn't stop thinking about how she's a member the entire time! Plus it doesn't help that she majored in acting at BYU. One thing my companion and I have learned is that over preparing for lessons never goes well. The lesson always ends up taking a different turn and we talk about something completely different! It all just depends on the investigators needs. We've been working on relying on the Spirit more. There's been a stomach bug going around campus and I caught it Friday night! I was feeling fine all day until right before our final class at night I did not feel good. My teacher Brother Simons is the best though. He let my companion and I go back to our residence so I got 3 extra hours of sleep that night. It was amazing! Saturday I felt the same until I bought some medicine from the book store. I felt like myself again after that. This Sunday Matthew Holland, the President of UVU came to speak at the MTC. I was so excited! He gave an amazing talk about how the Lord puts us through the refiners fire so we can become something more beautiful. He talked about the old tabernacle that is now the new Provo City Center Temple. Sometimes the Lord puts us through trials so we can come out the other side so much stronger then we ever were. I got my first package on Thursday from Aunt Marilyn and Uncle Cleo! They gave me so much sugar! I also got one yesterday from Mom and Dad with lots of sugar so I think I'll be set on food for the next month. Tomorrow my district is helping the new missionaries find their residences and classrooms. It's so strange to think I'm not new here anymore! I leave the MTC in a week. Tonight is my last night to sing at an MTC devotional! I can't believe it! I love this place so much. It's been a sanctuary where I get to learn something everyday. I've made so many friends here I don't want to leave! I can definitely see the hand of the Lord working in my life. I'm so thankful I have the opportunity to serve the Lord. He has done so much for me. My new favorite scripture is John 15:13 "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." Christ loved us all so much he suffered and died for us. The least we can do is follow him. Because he died for me, I'll devote the next 18 months of my life to serving him! I love my Savior and I love all of you!
Love,
Sister Matthews
Week three email:
Hello everyone!
First off, I'm not breaking the rules I promise. Since I fly out to Washington tomorrow, we get to email and take care of things today. Surprise! This week has been amazing! Tuesday evening we had a devotional with Gary E. Stevenson that was broadcast to all of the MTC's around the world! It was amazing! I was in the choir so if you know anyone in another MTC they might've seen me. Singing in front of an apostle was an amazing experience! We sang Hope of Israel which is now my new favorite hymn. The minute the Elder Stevenson walked into the room you could feel the Spirit so strong! He is truly a man of God! He talked about chapter 6 in preach my gospel which is on Christlike attributes. He told us to pick an attribute, read about it, and then apply it in our life. I chose humility. As I worked on this attribute I could feel the Spirit so much stronger in our lessons. It made it so much easier to recognize his promptings instead of just relying on what I know. He also left us with a blessing that our families and everything we left behind would be taken care of while we serve! That is so amazing! This week we also had infield orientation which was super cool. One thing that stood out to me was how much more effective missionary work is when the members are willing to help! So I challenge you to open your homes to the missionaries or even just go with them to appointments. I'm sure they will be grateful for your help! Everything this week has been going super well until I got to Saturday. That's when the MTC decided to try and kill me ha! So on Saturday my district all decided to go the field and play sand volleyball together since it was our last exercise time. So as I'm walking with everyone, an Elder comes out of nowhere and I tripped over him. But apparently I was walking super fast or something because I fell HARD. I first landed on my knee which is now all scraped up, then I twisted and hit my hip and then my head hit the pavement pretty hard. Everybody in my district freaked out because they all heard my head hit the ground. I felt fine though after I got up and brushed myself off. My head wasn't bleeding or bruised or anything. It didn't even hurt.Truly a miracle. So we all continue and play volleyball which probably wasn't a great idea because when Elder Johnsen went to serve, he missed and hit me in the head 30 minutes after I fell over. So you can imagine the headache I woke up with the next day. (Yesterday). But that's not all! Last night I was feeling good and took a shower and then I went to pick up all of my stuff and I stand up and hit my head on the shower railing! I couldn't believe it! I wasn't even in the handicap shower! I'm surprised I haven't hit my head today yet! I guess it's a good thing this is my last day in the MTC. Other than that, I'm so excited to fly to Washington tomorrow! I'll miss all the friends I made, but I know there are people out there that the Lord has prepared for me to teach. I'm so excited and I love you all!
Sincerely,
